I have been poking around looking for the a solution but have not found anything conclusive yet. I have not had the issue when plugging in a usb. The issue has seemed more or less random. I would say it happens more or less when I do something that is going to increase the workload. i.e. put a load on compiz. This will help eliminate your new memory as the problem.
