Jelly Bean Wallpapers

Posted by blognusantara | Thursday, June 28, 2012

Android, Ubuntu's little brother, is growing fast and now in its 4.1 version code-named Jelly Bean.
If you are like me, who use Ubuntu and Android, then this is worth celebrating. Nothing fancy, just by putting Jelly Bean wallpaper to adorn my desktop.
Jelly Bean comes with 1440 × 1280 wallpapers, which is big enough for most computer/laptop monitors. At least on mine they do.

Extension List | Gnome Shell Extension

Posted by blognusantara | Wednesday, June 20, 2012

Gnome Shell has beautiful and functional interface, but without extensions it can be quite boring. If you are like me, by now you are probably amassing few Gnome Shell extensions and managing them all is not going to be easier, then you need an extension to monitor all of your extensions in a glance .
Extension List by Amanda will do just that, it lists all of your installed extensions and their status (on,off, update) in Gnome Shell activity overlay.

I am aware that it can be done via Advanced Settings or via Gnome Shell web interface, but if you like to have great desktop theme integration then you'll like this extension.

Panel-Docklet | Gnome Shell Extension

Posted by blognusantara | Tuesday, June 19, 2012

If you follow this blog for some time, you must already knew my fondness of icons-only-windows-list feature from the age of the Ibex to Pangolin.
Now with Gnome Shell forces me to go to the upper left corner to show opened windows,   the feature becomes a must not just a novelty.
Earlier in Ubuntu 11.10, I found one good Gnome Shell extension that (un)fortunately doesn't work with newer Gnome Shell in 12.04. So the hunt was on again...
I found even better replacement called Panel-Docklet extension. This extension has  it all : good looking, configure-ability and versatility : you can use it as in-panel icon list, as a panel, or side/bottom docklet.

as in-panel icons with windows preview

configuration window
 Official description :
This extension represents all opened windows as Icons in a panel. There are a lot of possibilities for customization. It can be used as a docklet, panel or as anything else you create. It also supports multiple screens, workspaces, window-titles, favorites, dragging.

Ubuntu and TP-LINK TL-WN722N

Posted by blognusantara | Sunday, June 17, 2012

My old Toshiba L300 laptop wifi's card is busted. It only gains very weak signal even though the router is nearby and can only connect for about half an hour before disconnected. Fortunately this is not my mobile arsenal so I don't mind another USB device plugged in its port and certainly I don't want to buy the (expensive and hard to find) network card.
I need an USB WiFi and my choice was TP-Link TL-WN722N, for these reasons :
  • main reason : it works with Ubuntu flawlessly (tested on Ubuntu 11.04 and 12.04) without installing any driver, awesome.
  • I can plug it in my Ubuntu desktop too, since it uses USB interface,
  • compatibility with 802.11b/g/n devices,
  • external, detachable, and replace-able antenna : this will come handy as there is open and free Wi Fi not so near my house so an upgrade-able antenna is a must.
#1 works with Ubuntu 12.04
As you can see from this picture, it is recognized as Atheros USB2.0 WLAN.

#2 works with Ubuntu 11.04
note the big black antenna :)
Speaking of external antenna, I already replace the original with a 5dBi omni-directional antenna (see picture #2).
So if you are looking for an USB WiFi that works with Ubuntu, this is a great option.
