System 76's Lemur Ultra

Posted by Panji Nushantara | Wednesday, October 26, 2011

If you are in the market for new Ubuntu laptop check System 76's Lemur Ultra. System 76 is a Ubuntu-dedicated hardware company.
Lemur Ultra comes with Ubuntu 11.10 64 bit by default. So you don't have to do the (not too) hard work upgrading yourself.
You can see the hardware spec here detail.
I'm bought (but I don't need new laptop right now) just by looking the Ubuntu key :)

GIMP 2.7.4 on Ubuntu 11.10

Posted by Panji Nushantara | Monday, October 24, 2011

I just installed the new unstable development release GIMP 2.7.4 on my new and shiny Ubuntu 11.10. I haven't done rigorous testing, just do what I usually do i.e a light touch and it feels faster.
The one window mode feels more and more native and not just a patch, earlier it usually back to multi windows when restarted. Feels great.
And no, the horrible S&M style splash screen still there.
Just remember this is unstable release, bugs (and sleepless night) are expected.
Read here on how to add this PPA to your Ubuntu repository.

How To Fix Playonlinux Won't Start After Updating Ubuntu 11.04

Posted by Panji Nushantara | Wednesday, October 12, 2011

If you are running Ubuntu 11.04 with Playonlinux version 4.11  and recently updated Ubuntu, specifically :

  • python-wxversion to version 2.8.11.0-0ubuntu8.1(natty-updates)
  • python-wxgtk2.8 to version 2.8.11.0-0ubuntu8.1(natty-updates)

you may have nun-functional Playonlinux apps on your desktop. Like I did.

To fix this problem just rollback to previous working version of these two packages i.e the 2.8.11.0-0ubuntu8 (natty).

To downgrade go to synaptic package manager click the package and then  click CTRL-E to force the previous version for both packages.

Another fine example of newer doesn't always better.

PPA For Canon Printer Drivers

Posted by Panji Nushantara | Saturday, October 01, 2011

If you own Canon printer, and still not found a way to make it works under Ubuntu, add this PPA from Michael to your repository, update then install specific driver that you need.

After that, open your Printer management, then add the printer. You may need to delete the non working printer first, so Ubuntu will reinstall the new driver.

I have Canon iP1880 and I installed cnijfilter-ip1800series from the new PPA, now I have working Canon printer under Ubuntu Natty 11.04.
