Prolink P2000 and Ubuntu : FAIL

Posted by Panji Nushantara | Wednesday, March 31, 2010

My CDMA phone used as a modem finally showing its age and besides that I had constant worry about explosion possibility since its old battery have to be recharged all the time during usage. So I and my wife decided to buy a new CDMA modem. It's a Prolink P2000 CDMA 2000 1X modem.

...and Ubuntu 9.10 doesn't recognize it as a modem...

From lsusb command I know it's a 05c6:1000 Qualcomm, Inc and from what I've read it's a common problem because of the zero cd feature, that is useful for Windows, this feature makes OSes thinks that this USB devices is also a virtual CD. And it makes Ubuntu doesn't see the modem.
I've tried two methods i.e.: the usb_modeswitch method, and editing /etc/udev/rules.d/61-option-modem-modeswitch.rules method with no avail.
So for now the only way to stay connected is to share internet connection from my wife's Windows laptop via wifi.
Time for another fix hunt :D

High Resolution Wallpapers

Posted by Panji Nushantara | Tuesday, March 30, 2010

Dual monitors becomes my standard of working, I need bigger screen estate since I need at least one monitor for online trading, and the other for other things like technical analysis software, blogging, browsing, mail checking, you name it. But one thing becomes apparent, my old wallpapers are not enough. Even a good ones will look ugly, stretched and pixelated.
If you are like me, or use a high res monitor, ordinary resolution wallpapers won't do. That's when you need a higher resolution wallpapers.
HDWallpapers.net have collection of great looking high resolution wallpapers that are free to download, including these two:

Ubuntu and Gnome wallpapers

Visit HDWallpapers and satiate your wallpapers thirst :D

An Encouraging Proxy Error

Posted by Panji Nushantara | Monday, March 29, 2010

It's not usual to get error and still manage to smile. When I tried to access LinkWithin this afternoon i got this Proxy Error that showed :
Apache/2.2.8 (Ubuntu) PHP/5.2.4-2ubuntu5.10 with Suhosin-Patch
mod_wsgi/3.1 Python/2.5.2 Server at www.linkwithin.com Port 80
All it need just a refresh and everything back to normal. I don't know anything about web server stuff  so the cause of this error eludes me. But still seeing other Ubuntu on the other end bring smile to my face.

Yoono : A Great All Social Networks Client

Posted by Panji Nushantara | Sunday, March 28, 2010

Still looking for a fit for all desktop app to un-clutter your many Social Network accounts? If Gwibber doesn't satisfy your, then you have to try Yoono.
Yoono comes in three flavors for Windows, Mac and Linux.
I install both Linux and Windows version in my Ubuntu box. Yoono runs well under Wine too, so if you want the just-click-to-install comfort you can pick the Windows version, the Linux's comes in tar.bz2 not a .deb we all love.
I got to be honest, I install the .exe first then tar.bz2 extension.
To install the .tar.bz2 all you have to do is extract the content to your preferred folder and run (double-click) the executable yoono-desktop file. Easy.
After installation and now your Yoono is up and running just add your social networks, the process is easy and self -explanatory. Read here for detailed article about Yoono.

I use it for Facebook, Twitter and Yahoo! Messenger. It also support MySpace, Flickr, FriendFeed, Linkedin, MSN, AIM, GTalk for now.
I have to admit, I love this app.

The Biggest Space Eater in Ubuntu is...

Posted by Panji Nushantara | Wednesday, March 03, 2010

This morning I was browsing through Synaptic Package Manager to do some manual cleaning up of unused package files,  I got bored watching Jakarta Composite Index went to unwanted direction although it finally closed in safe point :p
So I started with sorting the biggest space eater first and here's what I found. The biggest space eater in my laptop is ubuntu-docs which consumes 259 MB, while its download package is a mere 474 kB.

What is ubuntu-docs? According to its description :
This package holds the official Ubuntu-specific documentation, maintained
by the Ubuntu Documentation Team. The documentation can  be viewed using
Yelp, the GNOME help browser.
So basically it's a huge help file, or what?
