KPPP | My New Friend

Posted by blognusantara | Thursday, February 25, 2010

I have problem with my GSM modem, not the modem itself, but the service in my area is getting worse day by day.
Fortunately I have an old CDMA phone/modem lying around, the bad news is network manager couldn't handle CDMA connection with extra initialization command.
That's where KPPP comes in. It has simple interface and yet provides deeper configurations should you need it.

Starting the KPPP will open up this dialog box :

Click configure to (of course!) configure your connection, Basically you have to configure your account and which modem to use. The trickiest part is in adding new modems. You should now where it is located e.g.: /dev/ttyACM0 for Nokia Phones connected via data cable. I don't know easy way to know this, yet.
You can add extra initialization command in Modems -> New... -> Modem -> Modem Commands.

After that. all you need to do is click Connect.

And here's how KPPP at works :

How To Use Multiple Versions of Wine in Ubuntu

Posted by blognusantara | Wednesday, February 24, 2010

If you have many Windows applications running under Wine, good chance are you'll need multiple versions of Wine. I only use two Win-apps, even they need two versions of Wine.
You can wait for the day when one-fits-all-version Wine to arrive, but until that day comes like it or not we must use multiple versions of Wine. So how to have different Wine for different Win-applications in your Ubuntu?
  1. install PlayOnLinux, I use Karmic Koala and PlayOnLinux is already listed in Synaptic Package Manager, so go there and install it.
  2. Tools -> Manage Wine Version -- Wine Versions tab; you can download and install different versions of Wine you need.

  3. After that, install Windows applications you need, you can either download the apps from PlayOnLinux repository or manually install from installation file by clicking install a.pol package or an unsupported application and follow the steps.

  4. after Windows application installations,  you can manage which Wine version to run which application on Tools -> Manage Wine Versions -- My Applications tab. Click the application and choose the Wine version on the drop box below it.

  5. you can select what application to run on PlayOnLinux main window.

Enjoy.

Wine 1.1.33 is The Best for Amibroker (for now)

Posted by blognusantara | Wednesday, February 24, 2010

Just a quick post for Amibroker users on Wine out there, the most compatible Wine version for Amibroker is the 1.1.33.
I already tested it until 1.1.38 and they're all have error with Amiquote.
This error makes Amiquote thinks that Amibroker is not (properly) installed and no ticker listed so you won't be able to update the database, and what's a Technical Analysis without updated database?
So stick with Wine 1.1.33 for now.

But what if your other Win-apps need the latest Wine or different versions? Install PlayOnLinux, you can have multiple versions of Wine to handle many applications that might need different Wine versions.

Ubuntu 8.04 and Sony Ericsson Xperia X1 = Mobuntu

Posted by blognusantara | Thursday, February 18, 2010

If you think these two have nothing to do with each other think again, Ubuntu run on Xperia X1.
Fatsal, a xda-developers forum member, made this possible and here is one of his screenshots to prove it. Head over this thread to read all about it.
It still on very early (and buggy) stage, but I think this is a beginning of something great, mobuntu (mobile ubuntu) maybe? :)
