Posted by blognusantara | Saturday, September 19, 2009

If you need a Kubuntu splash screen that stands out, maybe this is what you're looking for, at least I am. Meet Kubuntu Spectrum by homebaze.
I have no words to describe it, and thankfully we have something called picture :) Click for larger size.
Want one? Download Kubuntu Spectrum here.

kubuntu spectrum

Installation steps :
  • Download
  • go to System Settings -> Appearance -> Splash Screen
  • Install Theme File, point it to the downloaded file
  • it will appear on the list of available splash screen themes,
  • choose and apply, or you can preview it by clicking Test Theme menu.
Splash screen is one of the first things that appears on monitor, so installing a good one might be a good move to introduce Kubuntu to new users or just to make someone sits beside you envious.

First impression lasts, right?

Smooth Task | Icon Only Taskbar for Kubuntu

Posted by blognusantara | Thursday, September 17, 2009

If you like Windows 7 new taskbar and want it something like that in your Kubuntu, consider yourself lucky. There's a Smooth Task, an Icon Only (or Windows 7 taskbar like ) widget for Plasma created by Mathias Panzenböck.
This taskbar also has window preview in thumbnail like Windows 7 when you use the kwin '"highlight window'"effect. I don't use kwin but compiz, but it can also display tooltip of window' titles in place of thumbnail preview.

smooth task in kubuntu, it goes well with seven theme

For more detail and download page go to kde-look.org It is available as a source file, meaning it's not a just-click-to-install kind of file, you have to compile it yourself. Don't worry though there's a ready-to-use .deb package, download it here.
After installation, you can add it via Add Widget menu, you can add it as a free widget on your desktop or have it docked in your bottom bar by click and drag into it, like mine (pictured above).

Kstars in Kubuntu 9.04

Posted by blognusantara | Thursday, September 03, 2009

Looking for star constellations map software for Ubuntu? Stop looking, Ubuntu already listed it in its repository. It's Kstars that you're looking for.
What is Kstars ?
KStars is a desktop planetarium for KDE 4, depicting an accurate graphical simulation of the night sky, from any location on Earth, at any date and time. The display includes 130,000 stars, 13,000 deep-sky objects, all 8 planets, the Sun and Moon, and thousands of comets and asteroids.  It includes tools for astronomical calculations and can control telescopes and cameras.
If you have problem installing KStars on your Kubuntu and got error message that has something to do with indi something (like I did), try this method, it works for me.
  • uninstall Kstars and indi, if it was already installed,
  • add this PPA to your Software Sources ( open Synaptic then go to Settings -> Repositories -> 3rd Party Software):
    deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/josh-noisymime/ppa/ubuntu jaunty main
    then reload,
  • install Kstars again

source : launchpad

XP, Vista and Seven Themes in Ubuntu

Posted by blognusantara | Wednesday, September 02, 2009

I use Ubuntu because of its strength and not because I hate Windows. So I have no problem to use Windows-ish theme on my desktop theme now and then.
For some people this is an act of blasphemy. For me, it's a freedom of choice. Linux is about freedom, right?
So you need XP, Vista or Seven theme on your Ubuntu? You have to install Emerald Theme Manager first, and then use the import option.

Vista Theme

Miss the old XP? Here's XP Theme :

Unfortunately XP theme doesn't come in .emerald file so you can't import it from Emerald Theme Manager. You have to extract the zip file, WindowsXPsilver folder,  manually to /home/yourusername/.emerald/themes/ and then run Emerald Theme Manager.

Migrating to a new OS can be scary at first. Installing familiar themes can reduce the stress and smoothen the transition period.
