This question was asked in Yahoo!Answers.
I see it as a good sign that Ubuntu now (or 5 months ago) has reach those who don't even knew how to use it.
The fact that this user went to Yahoo!Answers gives me idea that Ubuntu forum as a place to look for/give help should be introduced on installation process and make
it as default homepage on live CD. After all Ubuntu is not just an OS
there's a live and helpful community behind it.
IMO, an option to sign up to Ubuntu forum in installation process when there's Internet connection available would be nice. And Ubuntu Forum shortcut in Start Menu won't do any harm.

I have to disagree. Ubuntu forums is no standard in helping the users. Many questions there are solved over night, but many remain unanswered for a long time, some forever. Signing the user for the forums would be intrusive and that's not the open-source way, at least as I see it. Still, having the information that help can be find in there, that's totally acceptable, as I see it:)

I have to disagree with the disagreement. The Ubuntu forums are way too important to pass off because it isn't a "standard", as if there will every be one, in helping users. I think it's a brilliant idea that somewhere in the beginning of the installation process, the user is notified about the forums, the IRC channels (and the way to connect to them), and various other resources of help, whatever they may be. It would be great, too, if this information was made available to them even earlier than the installation process, for example showing this information on the download pages, bright and clear, and to point them to preparatory measures you should take before installing, such as backup and other general knowledge regarding the repercussions of installing a separate or entirely new operating system (that isn't Windows).
