10 Things I Love About Karmic Koala

Posted by Panji Nushantara | Thursday, October 29, 2009

Now that the Koala is just hours from being released, here are point by point 10 things I love about Karmic Koala (while still in RC). Many points mentioned here is a comparison to previous Ubuntu. So embrace yourself, here we go...

10 things I love about Karmic Koala :
  1. the code name itself : there's something cool and cute about it, karmic koala, compared to the not so catchy jaunty jackalope,
  2. fast start up and shutdown,
  3. easier to customize touchpad, e.g. : enable horizontal scrolling, disable while typing,
  4. Intel graphic works without tweak, you know what I mean if you've tried Google Earth in 9.04.
  5. new new-user friendlier software management, Ubuntu Software Center,
  6. darker theme, personally I don't have problem with previous theme, even if I had it can be changed easily with few mouse clicks. But this new default theme makes Ubuntu looks mature.
  7. although I had problems with network manager in 9.10 beta, things are looking up after the RC. There's an option to disconnect from wireless connection.
  8. USB 3.0 support, thanks to the latest kernel. I don't have USB 3.0 devices yet but it's great to  have an OS that supports them. Did you know that Linux is the first to support USB 3.0 ? Cmiiw, even Windows 7 RTM doesn't support USB 3.0.
  9. easier to enable ctrl-alt-backspace, not everybody needs it but for me it's a must have.
  10. longer battery life, at least compared to jaunty.
Notice I didn't mention Ubuntu One and cloud computing, for someone like me who have limited  speed and bandwidth that cloud thing no matter how interesting it sounds, is almost useless. I do signed up an account for free 2GB though, just in case I find myself around fast hotspots.
Next time around, maybe I'll write 10 things I hate about Koala, just to make a balanced review, that is if I could find them :)
One more thing, please download Karmic via torrent to reduce main servers traffic and don't forget to seed. Enjoy Ubuntu!

How about starting a "10 things I Don't Like", just to be balanced, as I always find those interesting also.

I've stayed on Intrepid the last 6 months because of Jaunty's graphics problems.

10 Things I don't like (after less than a day with Karmic):

1: No Login screen (GDM) customisation. My login screen only looked like nice new one the first boot. Since then it's been a flat style that looks like mid-90s style. Don't know why and can't fix it. And moving from GDM Login customisation was deliberate! Also having problems adding a GRUB background (which dog knows, should be standard).

2: Some Applet icons screwed up and not refreshing

3: The Software Centre. Very basic. Should have held off until next release till it became usable.

4: Dual screen setup (Laptop + external), which has worked fine since Feisty, now screwed up. No (easy) way of setting my external display as the primary.

5: Back to GDM Login. One obvious security issue not fixed is showing the list of users at login screen. A lot of people wouldn't want this. (Yes it's fixable, but it shouldn't be standard).

6: Google Earth display text finally correctly, you're right, but the split screen sidepane now takes up 50% of the screen & I can't resize so have to switch it off.

7: Still incomprehensible options in system>adminsitration. IBus? What the hell is that? If I click it I get if I want to start the IBus Daemon. I have no idea what it is so I click "No".
Also the bloody SCIM Input Method setup, which I find the best way to screw-up your keyboard, which has no revert to previous option.

8: System>Appearence>Theme>Customise STILL doesn't have a "cancel" option to go back to where you were. So you open it, click something, and you can't remember which you were using previously. And this didn't make 100 Papercuts project?

9: Ubuntu One subscribing failing for me with some Indescipherable Firefox error. No idea how to fix it. I get an Options Firefox display and when I click it some screen pops up for less than a second and can't see it. "We've made it easy"??? No way.

10: Desktop display of Icons is still crap. I still can't have my icons in a small ordered list? (Nautilus options imply otherwise but they don't work)

wow, great list. some are new to me (what is Ibus anyway?), this could be a valuable addition to my next list.
    thanks donal :)
