Karmic Koala's Kernel on Jaunty Jackalope

Posted by Panji Nushantara | Saturday, August 29, 2009

If you like to have the latest kernel then you might want to install Karmic kernel on your Jaunty. There are two ways to do it : by manually download and install the kernels or you can add this PPA in your repository and always get the latest backport of the Karmic kernel to Jaunty.

Warning : non-default kernel may break your Ubuntu. If what you want is a stable Ubuntu with latest kernel it's safer and better to wait for Karmic Koala to arrive.

Add this PPA from a7x :
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/a7x/kbp/ubuntu jaunty main
And add this signing key: 1024R/ACABB5F5

Not only this PPA provides Karmic kernel for Jaunty, it also has updated packages required by the Karmic kernel e.g new nVidia xorg driver, udev, usbutils. For complete list go here. If you don't already know how to add these to your software sources then maybe installing non-default kernel is not for you, yet.
Although right now I'm using non-default kernel, 2.6.30.5, on Jaunty and it runs well, I have no intention to try Karmic kernel on my Jaunty. Once I tried to use Jaunty kernel on Intrepid and it didn't go well, I'll just wait for Karmic Koala :)
