Got this news from Ubuntu forum that HMR Group use a logo that looks like Ubuntu's. Here see the screenshot and decide (click the picture for bigger size). So what do you think?
I thought the whole idea behind Ubuntu was that everything was supposed to be free(as in speak and beer). You are allowed to copy as much of the source code as you want, why not the graphics?
I don't know what you guys are talking about. The logo is totally different. This is just like when people accused Vanilla Ice of stealing the riff from David Bowie's "Under Pressure" in "Ice Ice Baby" The two logos are nothing alike. I just don't see it.
nope. the ubuntu logo has the dots set to the color of the circle piece one to the right. So the orange circle part has a red dot, the red circle part has a yellow dot and the yellow circle piece has an orange dot.
Yeah,. it's really looks like a very similar logo,. not exactly the same,. but it would hold up in court if you wanted to go that direction.
I'm still waiting for my logo to be designed for my Online Marketing Professionals site, but I should have it soon,. and I'm sure I won't have have to worry about it.
It is too similar. I am sure Coca-Cola would sue me if I took their logo and just changed the color to blue - it is still clearly the same logo. It might not be the company's fault, the first thing I thought of is that some designer screwed them and sold them ubuntu logo.
They certainly look similar but is there really any chance people will confuse the two companies? Don't they have to demonstrate actual damages for a lawsuit be successful?
Will anyone looking to install Ubuntu confuse the two logos and unwittingly rent an apartment instead?
Or maybe someone who needs a new place will find themselves compelled to install a new operating system?
@Harold Fowler: if Ubuntu becomes mainstream one day, I'll walk around NY City naked and shout "I got bonned by both Bill and Steve and I liked it." Greatest thing since sliced bread, give me a break.
just wanted to thank you, panji, for letting the community know about this. someone in my LoCo posted it in our irc channel.
to others: he probably didn't provide a link because he didn't want his url to show up in their logs as the referrer url. smart thing to do, to be honest. although...
you may experience a bit of an unintentional DDoS- i submitted this to slashdot. hope your bandwidth holds out! assuming it gets posted, anyways. if it does and you were trying to keep it below the radar (by circumventing the trackback).. i don't think that'll be possible now. but on the bright side, at least you'll get a LOT more readers!
the logo is JUUUUST different enough for them to scrape by in a copyright trial, but at the same time it's DEFINITELY close enough to the original to warrant a trial in the first place. i hope Canonical pursues this.
The offices are situated at 226 St Georges Road and are the heart of the HMR Group. HMR Group of companies was established in 2002 by founders
Ubuntu is a community developed and supported project. Since its launch in October 2004

@jack: it's not my eyes you should thank for :) I got this news from ubuntu forum (already linked to it).
@phonixor : here's what I know so far :
1. Ubuntu : - Ubuntu community was launched in October 2004, - Ubuntu.com has been online since 24 May 2004 (source alexa.com) so ubuntu, at least, use their logo since 2004.
2. hmrgroup : - established in 2002 (I don't know what logo they used back then and there's no guarantee they used the same logo as today since it's not uncommon for company to change their logo) - no record of hmrgroup' online date in archive.org (it must be less than six months - since archive.org only provide archive six months after collection.
so there's still no exact time when did hmrgroup started use their logo. we still in dark here about who's first.
anyone knows about hmrgroup logo's history please step forward :)
Re: Pål av Stål: "everything was supposed to be free": no not really, ever notice this is ubuntu.COM not ubuntu.ORG? The idea is to make everything as free as possible WHILE still making money.
Looking at the www.ipo.gov.uk website, neither Canonical or the HMR group actually have registered that particular logo. And this means that both are allowed to use it.
Trademarks are to protect consumers against fraud. That's it! Copyright is a completely different monster. But I would highly recomment this short article on why "copyright" power was given to congress in the Constitution: http://press-pubs.uchicago.edu/founders/documents/a1_8_8s12.html
wow, that looks pretty similar to ubuntu's logo. it isn't exactly the same, but its close, if someone made a logo that was similar to like the apple logo, or one of the many windows flags, they would be sued into bankruptcy so fast they wouldnt even know what hit them.
That's what the Ubuntu trademark policy is for. To stop misuses like that.
It sure looks like the Ubuntu logo to me.
Canonical must sue HMR's butt! how dare they did so???!!!!!
Stolen logo=stolen business= fake company=HMR
It does look almost identical. Though I kinda like theirs better. Maybe when ubuntu finishes sueing them they could steal their logo.
I thought the whole idea behind Ubuntu was that everything was supposed to be free(as in speak and beer). You are allowed to copy as much of the source code as you want, why not the graphics?
and no, I won't link there
in the screenshot, we can see the URL :)

That is one hot girl... er... logo? what logo?
God the photoshop work on that site is GOD AWFUL! That hand just sort of floats there.
If I were an idiot in a hurry, I would mistake this for the Ubuntu logo, therefore this is a trademark violation. Simple as that.
Meh...

This will never see a courtroom.

Ubuntu is without doubt the greatest thing since sliced bread!

If you see a ubuntu logo on that site say Yay!! :-)

no need to link, the url is actually in the screenshot.
@maxime and leon :
:) yes you can see the link in the screenshoot.
what I meant was I won't hyperlink to it. but still I want to show you the real url so nobody accuses me of making this up.
cheers
Who had it first? That is the first question to ask.
i thought this posted... i guess not.

Reduce both logos to only black and white.
her hand is just evil! eeeeevillll!

They could just put a "download Ubuntu" banner on their web site and everyone would be happy...
They should know better.
Apartments != Operating Systems?
Unless each apartment comes equiped with high speed internet and a windows machine...
Okay, so here's the HMR Logo, here is the Ubuntu Trademark Policy and here are all the Official Ubuntu Logo's. I'd say read their policies, compare logos and then decide.

I saw this logo with titles HMR Group on a van in Singapore. It does look very similar to the Ubuntu logo; time for Canonical to make some law money?
The latest version of Ubuntu rocks. It's easily the best operating system available including Microshaft Winblows.

does any one know the identity of the ubuntu logo designer?
